- 1.1. WHAT IS PERSONAL DATA? Personal data is any information about personal or factual circumstances relating to an identified or identifiable natural person. This includes, for example, your name, date of birth, email address, postal address or telephone number and online identifiers such as your IP address.
- 1.2. WHAT IS PROCESSING? "Processing" means any operation or set of operations which is performed upon personal data, whether or not by automatic means. The term is broad and covers virtually any processing of data.
- 1.3. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DATA PROCESSING? The entity responsible for data processing is FreeForStudents ("FreeForStudents", "we", "us" or "our") as the responsible entity within the meaning of the UK's Data Protection Act ("DPA") and the EU General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR").
- 1.3.1. If you have any questions about this policy or our data protection practices, you can contact us by email at [email protected].
- 1.4. WHAT ARE THE LEGAL BASES FOR PROCESSING? We will only process your personal data if there is at least one of the following grounds:
- 1.4.1. CONSENT - This is where we have asked for your explicit consent to process your data for a specific purpose.
- 1.4.2. CONTRACT - This is when we process your data to fulfil a contractual agreement with you or to respond to your messages, emails, calls etc.
- 1.4.3. LEGITIMATE INTERESTS - This is where we rely on our interests as the reason for processing. Generally, it is to provide you with the best products and services in the safest and most appropriate way. Before we invoke any of these legitimate interests, we will of course balance them against your interests and ensure that they are compelling enough and will not cause unwarranted harm.
- 1.4.4. LEGAL OBLIGATION - This is when we are required by law or otherwise to process the data, for example for archiving or investigating crime.
- 2. Data We Collect
- 2.1. LOG DATA - Even if you do not log in or register on our website, but simply surf our website, data is collected and stored and processed by us. The legal basis for the processing is our legitimate interest.
- 2.3. GOOGLE FONTS - We use Google Fonts from Google on our website to display external fonts. To enable the display of certain fonts on our website, a connection to the Google server in the USA is established when our website is accessed. Through the connection to Google, which is established when our website is accessed, Google can determine from which website your request originates and to which IP address the display of the font should be transmitted. This constitutes a legitimate interest.
- 2.4. CONTACTING US - When you contact us, we store and process the following data from you: Name, email address, telephone number and other personal data that you provide when contacting us. This data is collected and processed solely for the purpose of contacting you and processing your enquiry and is subsequently deleted unless there is a legal obligation to retain it. The precise data that is collected depends on how you are using our forms and surveys and on your responses. The data provided is typically processed using the services of Tally and or Survicate. The legal bases for processing are your consent and our legitimate interest.
- 2.6. STUDENT DEALS - If you wish to redeem any student deals displayed, you will be redirected to the relevant advertising partner. The redirection requires your IP address and other technical data. We have no influence or control over the data that the relevant advertising partner collects and processes when you are redirected and you can find out more about the data processing in the privacy policy of the relevant advertising partner.
- 3. Cookies
- 3.1. WHY DO WE HAVE A COOKIE POLICY? This Cookie Policy is in accordance with the UK's Privacy and Electronic Regulations ("PECR") and the EU Directive on Privacy and Electronic Communications ("PECD"). In accordance with these laws, we must inform you about the cookies we use and obtain your consent when we use certain types of cookies, namely functional, performance, analytical and advertising cookies.
- 3.2. WHAT ARE COOKIES? Cookies are small files containing configuration information that are stored on your device. Cookies can be divided into the following two broad categories:
- 3.2.1. TECHNICALLY NECESSARY COOKIES (ESSENTIAL) - Technically essential cookies are necessary for the proper functioning of our website; they allow you to navigate our website efficiently and use its functional features. An example of this is remembering recent actions (e.g. entering text) when you return to a page within the same session.
- 3.2.2. TECHNICALLY NON-ESSENTIAL COOKIES (PERFORMANCE, FUNCTIONAL, ANALYTICAL, ADVERTISING) - Technically non-essential cookies are not necessary for the proper functioning of our website, but allow us to improve the content of our website, compile statistics for internal market analysis, provide you with a more personalised online experience or provide additional functionality. In particular, we use analytical and advertising cookies.
- 3.2.2.1. Analytical cookies are used by third parties. These cookies allow third parties to recognise that you have visited our website. We and our third-party vendors may also combine the information obtained from these cookies with Personal Data available from other sources, including information collected about you when you use other websites and information collected about you when you are offline, whether on our website or in data maintained by the third-party vendor.
- 3.2.2.2. Advertising cookies may be set by our advertising partners through our website. They may be used by these companies to profile your interests and show you relevant advertising on other websites. They are based on uniquely identifying your browser type and the type of internet device you are using. If you do not allow these cookies, you will receive less targeted advertising.
- 3.3. Within the categories described, different types of cookies are used, which can be divided into the following three subcategories:
- 3.3.1. SESSION COOKIES - While you are active on a website, a session cookie is temporarily stored in the memory of your computer, which stores a session identifier, for example, to prevent you from having to log in again each time you change pages. Session cookies are deleted when you log out or lose their validity once the session has automatically expired.
- 3.3.2. PERMANENT OR PERSISTENT COOKIES - A persistent or log cookie stores a file on your computer for the period of time specified in the expiry date. These cookies allow websites to remember your information and settings for your next visit. This results in faster and more convenient access, as you do not have to enter your language settings for our portal again, for example. After the expiry date, the cookie is automatically deleted when you visit the website that generated it.
- 3.3.3. THIRD-PARTY COOKIES - Third-party cookies come from providers other than the website operator. They can be used, for example, to collect information for advertising, individual content and web statistics.
- 3.4. GOOGLE ANALYTICS - We use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google. - 3.5.1. Hotjar stores this data in a pseudonymized user profile. Neither Hotjar nor we will use this information to identify individual users, nor will the data be merged with other data about individual users. The use of Hotjar is based on your consent.
- 3.6. GOOGLE ADSENSE - We use Google AdSense, a web advertising service provided by Google. Google AdSense uses so-called "DoubleClick DART Cookies" ("Cookies"). In addition, Google AdSense also uses so-called "web beacons" (small invisible graphics) to collect information, through the use of which simple actions such as user traffic on our website can be recorded, collected and evaluated. The information generated by the cookie and/or web beacon (including your IP address) about your visit to this website will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States.
- 3.6.1. Google uses the information thus obtained to carry out an evaluation of user behaviour with regard to the AdSense ads. The IP address transmitted by your browser as part of Google AdSense will not be merged with other Google data. The information collected by Google may be transferred to third parties where required to do so by law, and/or where such third parties process the information on Google's behalf.
